Install on a partitioned hard drive

I am running windows Xp on an older Dell. The hard drive is already partitioned and I would like to install Ubuntu 8.10 on the existing second partition without disturbing Xp. Can that be done and how? I have read the Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference but I don't think that it addresses my question. Any suggestions? Thanks

Install; go 'Manual' and pick the partition.
