I am puting ubuntu 8.10 on my first laptop... this is an old Dell from around 2001 or 2002... I am wanting to make a laptop that can surf the internet so that I can get mine back from my girlfriend. I had to get a new CD/Rom for it... the old one was fried and it will not boot from USB... least I can't make it... I get most of the way through the install and it gives me a error message about inputs and out puts. It says the most common causes are... bad boot disk (tried two different ones) or bad hard drive... but this thing was working. How do I check if it is a bad HD and is there anyway to section of sectors of the hard drive and still keep it usable??? In case you can not tell... not a total nub but pretty close.
thanks,
kelly

I would suggest you burn the ISO as slow as possible and then give it a try.

I tried that already... That was suggested on the screen so I went and did that...
Really not wanting to buy another HD if that is not the problem...
