I'm using Ubuntu since more then a year as 'functionnal user' but have some basic knowledge in Linux

I bought recently on ebay a Proliant server and want to use it as workstation but I'm confronted with the following issue:
After installation and restart of ubuntu 8.04 I'm requested to do logon (introduce User & Passw is OK) but after a few seconds of disk activities .. nothing .. blocked !!!!

In recovery mode I have access and can do a lot of things
And Windows ... also works pretty good !!!

I read on different forums that the adapted card included in the ML110 can generate some problems but , in my case, during installation everything seems OK (the created array (of 160 GB) is recognised)!

To isolate the problem I erased everything and reinstalled Ubuntu alone on my Array of 160 GB.

My cnfiguration:

HP Proliant ML110
2 GB RAM
Processor Pentium IV 3.2GHz
RAID SATA Adaptec 2610SA with 2 disks of 80GB in RAID 0
Video card PCI Matrox Millenium MIL/2/DEC

My questions:
-where can I find the file the the log of the installation (to find a potential error during install) ?
-does somebody have a similar expérience
-in which direction do I have to search?

Thanks to everyone who could help me
