'Was wondering - confused - see i was on #ubuntu irc channel the other day and to someone who asked a simple question, i referred them to the u-guide for the answer, seeing as they obviously didn't seem aware of this useful resource. I was promptly made aware by more than one person in the room including the moderator, that i should not refer anyone to ubuntuguide.org. In fact they were, quote, evil, un-quote. !?!?!?
I thought that was rather harsh, and came as a real shocker. Apparently they have had lots of people with problems come to the irc channel for support after having run into trouble due to using the ubuntuguide.

Having used, nay, relied, on the guide for all manner simple set-ups etc., and never having had a problem this was a first to me. From experience, everyone here in the forums are sent to the guide as a first line in problem solving, and they are sent by moderators including. It's almost ubuntu bible isn't it?

So, what is the truth? Are we not to use it or refer people to it? Does anyone have bad experience using it?

Ive had nothing but luck with it. I have never got why its such a big deal either. I have found IT (http://ubuntuguide.org/) to be easier to get around than the official one.

me 'neither. Makes me wonder why the people at #ubuntu were feeling to have to put it down thus. are there different ubuntu camps?
The forum people and the irc people? the fact that there are now two irc channels too. #ubuntu and #ubuntuforums. I know one is social but still... sounds like a case of politics then. I know i shall continue referring to the u-guide quite happily. but be warned do not recommend it on the #ubuntu channel! ;)

The problem if people starting to put the hoary sourcelist in breezy I guess. I've seen the problem on this forums.

This is one valid reason why you *should* give a shout to the documentation team (that's us) either by:


Going to #ubuntu-doc and chat with a member that currently maintains the guide so he could make changes according to your suggestions.
File a bug in bugzilla if you find erroneous documentation
Get involved if you want to improve official documentation (join the team for starters) for future releases.


Of course, we're not going to add legally questionable stuff in official documentation for obvious legal reasons. But that doesn't mean we'll have sucky documentation because we can't add them. :)

No prob. ;) I usually dont go to devs or people like you guys because Ive been met with hostility in the past. Noone likes to be asked to do something differently that they have worked so hard on. Just my experience. :)

I think in the end its just the Unofficials layout. Just something about it.
Now I look at the Official one for info.

As a side; Can/will the Official guide ever be printed as a book? I love having something in-my-hand and not always need a internet connection to do something. If there arent are there any apps to do page layout for a book? Or even just something thats printiable? Maybe I could do that? :)

some like it some don't. I've never seen any problems with it in #ubuntuforums :P but we don't do the extreme population type support thing that #ubuntu does.. too many people in #ubuntu.
