I want to run openbox with the following functionality: automount, sound, syntpac manager, and connect to lan network. Im just looking for some essential files to install. Have a look at psychocats (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/) web page, for info on installing other software.

You can't go wrong with Urukrama’s Openbox Guide (http://urukrama.wordpress.com/openbox-guide/) for all things Openbox. If you want a panel you can try tint2 (http://code.google.com/p/tint2/). I just moved to tint2 from pypanel and it works well and looks good. You'll probably have to compile it yourself since it doesn't seem to be in the repositories.

If you're going through the trouble to simplify your base installation you may want to look into Arch Linux (http://www.archlinux.org/).
