View Full Version : Gas or Electric fire?

What does everyone own? ;)
I have recently bought an electric fire, utter rubbish, little more than a heated fan :(, and yet gas fires are very hard to come by in general stores, the electric fire is on its way back and i will fit the old gas fire back in, very warm and the warmth stays around long after the fire has been turned off :)
I would not recommend you an electric fire

I grew up in a house with a real peat fire every day - even on summer nights. Nothing can beat that. real smoke too *cough*.

We lost our gas key ages ago, so now we burn wood in a large metal firebowl in the backyard.

The "correct" answer for me is "electric" but I clicked "other" because most of the people I know would call an "electric fire" something like "heater", "electric heater", "fan heater", or possibly "afi" (roughly translates as "fire").

How the heck would you do a pure electric fire anyway?? Using electric to light gas, wood or some other flammable, or using it to heat metal is one thing but producing a flame?

Wood/log fire.
Prefer to burn oak as it is a tight/hard wood that will burn what seems like eternity, I like Hickory for the smell... but I burn what ever I have on the woodpile, usually pine, fir or birch..
Lost electric for 5 days a few winters ago, kept the fire going all night, all day for 5 days. I basically camped in my livingroom. With electric or gas, such a fire would have been impossible as the heat is electrically maintained.
As long as I had a lighter, nothing stops my fireplace!@

I live in the desert where it gets up to 120 degrees F during the day and drops down to a low of 100 at night.
I have NO idea what you people are talking about :o:o:o

Me?
I don't **** around with matches, firestarter sticks, and lighters anymore. When I want to get a fire going-I pull out Ye Olde Faithful Blowtorch.

Gas Fire, was a coal/wood/anything than burns fire. flame is far better, plus you end up stareing at it just like a pool of water.
gas for cooking too as i wont get started on those electric ring or halogen cookers.

It's not a real fire. It's pretty much a heater with a screen that looks like a fire. I'm not sure how they work, but I have one and it's pretty cool. You can't really get the effect from a still picture, but here's a pic for you.
