In fact, if the truth be known, I suspect that Microsoft Corporation might not have been the best thing that could have happened the fledgling home computer industry. Furthermore, I believe they charge too much money for products which are often inferior to free GPL alternatives.

Years ago I thought I understood why Apple charged so much more for their Apple computers in the past, because every old Apple machine that I came across had a SCSI hard disk inside.
Even now SCSI hard disks are much more expensive than IDE or SATA disks for the same amount of storage space.
But Apple moved away from SCSI disks, and the prices of Apple machines didn't drop that much I think :-)

Is this not the attitude that gave Microsoft their monopoly in the first place?
Not that we should succumb to that often used "M$" acronym as Linux folk often do. But neither should you let your guard down and dismiss out of hand any just criticism of Microsoft.
Microsoft got where they are by flouting laws and by buying the people that make those laws which they couldn't flout.
This is not even a matter of speculation, it is a matter of fact. Microsoft's history is replete with examples of this behaviour.
If you use Linux, no matter which distribution, you can not afford to have an attitude of absolute apathy.
"I have a mild distaste for Windows" is an understatement, but I still have to deal with Windows (XP anyway).
One Windows user labeled me "Freetard" as an insult. Is it an insult? I fixed that persons machine and moved on.

Yes please show us proof of this.
The fact you did not divulge previous examples that are public knowledge, Netscape being the obvious, means I think you know perfectly well what I state. Hell, not even Microsoft themselves disagree with this. Unless you beg to differ.
Just a few examples
http://www.groklaw.net/articlebasic.php?story=20071023002351958

You can Google to your hearts content to find the history of Microsoft and their dealings with the darkside.
I would imagine it may be of public record in America how many Senators have taken money from Microsoft lobbyists in turn for favours.
What amazes me is tech sites all over the Internet have similar stories which Microsoft rarely deny, but those that use Microsoft could never believe or acknowledge.

You made a statement claiming it was fact with no sources. Why should I believe anything you say? The fact that I asked for proof means I want you to show your sources so I can take your statement as creditable. It is not my responsibility to look up your sources for you.
Also you might be confusing public knowledge with publicly record. Public knowledge emplies that I can go to someone on the street and they would know what I was talking about.

I guess Microsoft know their market, apathy rules the roost.
On an Ubuntu forum, if you are critical of Ubuntu it is considered constructive criticism. If you are critical of Microsoft and Windows it is considered heresy. Did I miss something?
Debian, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, Gentoo and even OpenSuse do not cater to Microsoft apologists like Ubuntu forums do. I am aware of the market Canonical hopes to aim for, it seems to many Ubuntu users Linux comes a distant second to Windows itself.

I have a mild distaste for Microsoft products because after 3 years of using Ubuntu exclusively, I find it difficult to find my way around Windows. I'm not too bad in XP, but Vista is like Ubuntu was when I first tried it. When I first started using 'IBM Clones' back in the late '80s and early '90s. There were plenty of OS choices around...
MS-DOS
DR-DOS
PC-DOS
OS\2
Xenix
Unix
CP/M
N/DOS
The list goes on and on. Windows was little more than a graphical shell. Who remembers MS-DOS executive? My point is, that there was lots of choice. But when Windows 3.0 launched, the market liked it. It was a revolutionary change in the PC world. It was a massive success, Microsoft's market share increased massively and the rest is history. If it had been crap Microsoft would never have gained a monopoly and they would probably selling Office software for Apple Macs.

I find it irritating that people actually request proof for Microsoft's bad behaviour... yeah, that sounds strange/arrogant, but it's really open knowledge.
Anyone following the IT politics of the last 15 years is aware of Microsoft's EEE strategy***, their bribing of various should-be-independant entities (most recently ISO) and their competition stifling/threatening.
Feel free to google, you'll find much more than the most prominent examples like the antitrust case (where they even submitted a manipulated video), IE/MP bundling, various lock-ins, DRM/Palladium, anticompetitive artificial barriers, API withholding, Kerberos misleading, anti Linux FUD, patent claims FUD, the DR-DOS case, the Virginia Beach case, the Blue Mountain Arts case, the Steve Barkto incident, the astroturf DOJ campaign, excessive vapor marketing, the evisceration of Sypglass, ...
Every single of them a valid reason for dislike.
Note that I'm not saying Microsoft "sux"... just that they've repeatedly engaged in (morally and often borderline-illegally) bad business practices and have been convicted of some of them.
Also note that this has nothing to do with the operating system Windows, which is a very well built system (by some of the best programmers in the world) suffering from bad post-development requirements by Microsoft's leading business establishment.
Windows has it's flaws and one can dislike it (you can dislike whatever you want after all), but it has good points too.
Unlike Microsoft, you can only dislike Windows because of it's usability or the lack thereof... which I think is quite a different scale of resentment.
*** For the younger one's I'll probably have to add that this has nothing to do with Asus laptops ;)

I think you misread my posting ;)
Who makes how many millions is not part of it (and I can sleep very well, thank you), I just tried to hint at the difference between disliking Windows and disliking Microsoft.
If it wasn't Microsoft then it would be... who? Can you show me another company with such a bad record? Not just the usual jealousy against the leading corp (which IBM had enough of before Microsoft came up), but a list of very bad things similar to that of Microsoft?
So the point is to educate. Such questions as "why should one dislike Microsoft?" or "show me a reason why microsoft is bad?" like the one I've responded to show that there is a lack of knowledge.
Is it a bad thing to fix that?

Why garlic? Because it, like cake, is a far more constructive topic than the one we are discussing.
This whole topic is pointless. I have a mild distaste for every operating system. For many (Windows, Ubuntu, OS X, openSUSE, the list goes on...), I have a very strong distaste. But it doesn't matter. No matter how many different systems are pointlessly bashed, it isn't going to matter.
If you want to hold a somewhat educated debate, with decent argumentation and evidence, that's fine. It's pointless, but at least somewhat interesting. But starkly stating a bunch of opinions is just boring.

i personally believe that windows is NOT for the average person. constant vigilance in fighting malware, slowdowns, defragging, worrying about what websites and software is safe is all a little too much for joe six pack to handle. that's why every computer i see being used by joe 6 pack is infested beyond repair, and basically unusable. how is it that windows is more user friendly?
sure, in the right hands, windows can be an effective tool. but in reality, how many "right hands" are there in the world? very few if you ask me. that's why my customers that use ubuntu could not be happier. all they want to do is surf the net without worry, check email, IM'ing, maybe a little gimp, or mp3's. why do we need windows for these things?
windows, it would seem, is the OS not ready for primetime. business's yes. joe 6 pack no. and btw, i'm not bashing, just telling the truth.

To be frank, there aren't many "right hands" for any OS. Ignorance can screw you on Linux as well, and will if it ever gets high enough desktop market share to attract serious malware attempts.

Discussing issues is great. "I have a mild distaste for Windows" isn't an issue, it's an opinion without any evidence or logic behind it. The OP is totally entitled to that opinion, but there's really no reason for anyone else to care. Hopefully, your first post and the first part of this reply may morph into a discussion over time.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who got a traditional, self-replicating virus. Every instance of malware I've seen has been installed with social engineering.
I'll agree with you on defragging - NTFS is a terrible file system. Fragmentation, poor performance... NTFS has got it all!

if vista was the only os in the market' i would certainly use it' though the thought of bending over comes to mind after agreeing to each eula i have to accept
Mr. Gates would have preferred it that way. He was the extraordinary geek of the times. A geek who was financially adept.

if mr. bill wishes to make some big bucks' it's because someone chose to use their software and agreed to their terms.......

I use XP at work and I have to say it's a pretty good OS, it mostly gets out of the way so I can do my work.

Cake!
I think you mean pie. Yes, I'm certain you do.
As for me, it's given me no small amount of displeasure to have not been able to avoid missing out on the lack of opportunity to never have failed to use products not made by people other than the Microsoft corporation.

Me too, but mainly how they behave as a corporation. Their software is good though. I guess with 100's of millions of users they have alot of testers they can get feedback from.
