Need Help With 1st Time Install

I would like to install ubuntu as a second operating system on a second partition.

I tried this once but I ended up formating my entire drive and erasing my other operating system. The installation was successful.

Can someone explain the process I need to follow in order to keep this from happening?

I need to run XP for a while until I get used to ubuntu.
