Hi all,

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 on a new Dell Mini 12 using a USB CD drive. The CD boots fine, and I get the usual install/test/check CD menu, but when I select 'install' or 'try Ubuntu', I don't get the desktop. Instead I end up with the terminal, like:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

I've used the same installation CD before to set up my desktop so I know it's okay. Any ideas how I get it running on my new laptop?

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with 8.10. I tried 8.04.2 instead and I was able to get all the way to the desktop using the "try it" option. It seems that 8.4 includes the driver for our video card but it has not been integrated into 8.10 yet. However. when I tried to install it would not detect the hard drive so I could not finish the install.

I am still looking for a fix for the hard drive.

Sometimes, if you type 'exit', then it will try to boot. It doesn't work all the time, and may not work in this instance, but it's worth a try.
