Asking for recommendations

I would like to ask for recommendation on how to install Ubuntu.

First of all, I just want to install Ubuntu 8.10 base system (with command line interface) + the things I need such as GNOME, GDM, X server, LAMP, Java, Eclipse and other packages.

Now, which edition of Ubuntu would you guys recommend? I tried using the Ubuntu Alternate (text-based) installer but found no step where I can choose only the packages I need.

Any recommendations? :D

I think you are looking for a minimal install, not the alternate install. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD for information.
