this is probably the most positive appreciation ive seen of ubuntu in the popular press.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/mar/19/linux-open-source

choice highlights:

So I tried again with Ubuntu, on both desktop and laptop, and after no more than a week of faffing, I think it's just about OK.

So I tried Xubuntu, a version of Ubuntu that has a lightweight and well-thought-out window manager. It's quicker to start up and even to wake from sleep than XP was, and – astonishingly for any Linux desktop – it's not ugly or obtrusive.

I won't be reinstalling Windows

but then spoils it at the last minute with

Xubuntu at least makes a worthwhile free upgrade to Windows XP

........and unless you are a serious user of multimedia, Xubuntu at least makes a worthwhile free upgrade to Windows XP.
When he says multimedia he is talking about video editing and shockwave?
It is just way too unbelifable that he could not play his ripped songs... unless if they are in a format he made... oh wait... he might have ripped it with the genius*sarcasm* of a media player... WMP, with a very good *sarcsm*codec -.-

Aha, I like it where he says:

The ending was a little unfair I thought.

Not exactly thorough, but a positive-ish review nonetheless.

I think the BBC have had a much more positive review than this on their IT show click.

With w32codecs installed, I haven't yet found a music file format I can't play. Is there some top-secret windows codec yet to be cracked by them evil reverse-engineers??

I read that review and while it is harsh, it's overall quite positive. In fact, its harshness makes it more credible.

The message seems to be, you could try Linux now, it's come a long way.

thats what i got from it. he doesnt say its the most rabidly wonderful thing ever, he doesnt say its awful. he says he likes it, he's gonna use it, he had teething troubles and got over it.

its good to get positive press!

It's good to see the press putting out an article in which they're not just slavishly and mindlessly pro-Microsoft.
