terminal not opening

I am using ubuntu 8.10 in dell 330 desktop.

TERMINAL not opening.

Plz. any one can help me.

Would that be a Dell precision 330, or a dell optiplex 330, or yet another variant? We don't yet know what your hardware is in enough detail to help much.

When you say "terminal not opening", do you mean that it doesn't log you into to the Gnome desktop, or that Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal isn't working?

If the former (failed login), does Ctrl-Alt-F1 switch to a text-mode console?
If the latter (failed gnome-terminal), does Alt-F2 -> xterm bring up a different kind of terminal window?

Does System -> Administration -> update manager work?
