View Full Version : Anyone know what makes LCD display backlights turn on?

I have an old laptop. It's lame, so I threw it out. But I kept the display. I would like to use it only for the EL backlight. It would be cool just to have it as a white light.

It has a strange connector that originally plugged into the motherboard. Anyone know what makes the backlights light up? I could start probing around with DC but I really don't know. Also, the panel might be black by 'default' in which case I would need to try to separate the backlight.

usually there is an inverter needed to power those types of back lights. I'm not sure if straight DC will power the light.

It is a high voltage PSU, usually built into the back of the display panel. The light itself is a very small (cold cathode) fluorescent tube. Try inputting 5V DC into the connector and see what happens.
