I recently downloaded ubuntu 8.10-desktop-i386. When I try and make a LiveCD using CD Recording Wizard(following instructions provided @ ubuntu sight) I eventually get:
operation has failed. Code 8004020e, Reason: A generic error occured.

help!?

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 with windows xp and all the SPs

Try using another program to burn the iso like imgburn (http://www.imgburn.com/) Also make sure that the md5sum (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM)matches before burning.

Hi, you might like to check out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto for more details. I suggest burning at a slow speed like 4x, this helps prevent write errors. If you still have problems, you may want to try a different batch of CD-Rs.
If you really can't get it to work, you can order a CD from ShipIt - https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ - thought it may take a few weeks to arrive.

they are all new cd-rw's.
I tried burning at slower speeds
tried multiple cd/dvd burning programs
I will try the one you suggested.

The problem may be that you are using re-writeable discs, CD-RWs. These can often cause problems for this type of application. You should try some plain old CD-Rs if at all possible. Good luck.

Also if you are using cheap media (I.E. Dynex brand)
older IDE drives HATE cheap media.
so if this is the case try using a different brand

I was having the same issue. I installed ImgBurn as suggested above. And It didn't work. But then I used it again and set the speed to 4x.. and wala... it worked. Good luck folks.
