View Full Version : For those of you that build...where did you get your parts?

you get them offline from tigerdirect.com or newegg.com or some local shop?
When I built my last I got it at a small computer store but since then they have went out of business because they had a hard time selling enough to keep up the store with all the college students buying pre-built rigs from Dell, HP, Gateway, etc (Kansas State U. :p)

Online it is Newegg.com all the way. I also buy from the PC Club here locally because they are the cheapest place in town to buy stand alone computer parts. Buying online is almost always cheaper than buying locally though.

Edit: Do they have computer parts store in KC? You should be close enough to KC to justify driving to buy parts.

i get a lot of hardware from the street on council pick up day. its amazing what people throw out. the rest i buy from a small local shop or from computer markets. the unsw computer market and the north rocks computer market sell good hardware for chips, and so does ziplink computers: http://www.ziplinkcomputers.com.au

sydney is kind of a long way from kansas though :)

I moved :p
I think that it would have been close enough to make it worth it, especially if I hung out in KC for the night.
I am in NC now and I think there are a couple good stores in town. Only thing I have bought since I have been here has been a CPU fan. I am planning on buying some good products here in a month or so, hopefully one of them will have good deals. (I just found newegg.com the other day :o )

Avoid Tiger Direct like the freaking plague for key components. One word, refurbished. I know all refurbs aren't bad eggs but... no.

Agreed about Tiger Direct. They have a bad rating by the BBB and they have Government action being taken against them. I hear Zipzoomfly.com is pretty good too but I have never bought off of them.

They are my favorite. Cheap, fast shipping. New Egg and them are best (cept for monitors....buy those local AFTER looking at them to make sure no dead pixels).

Newegg.com all the way. I'd be poor without them. \\:D/

What processor and socket mobo are you looking for? I saw a 754 socket mobo there a few weeks ago with pci-e. If you are considering a sempron I would suggest paying the extra 50 to 75 dollars to get the Athlon 64 3200 and 939 socket mobo. You will be much happier with this choice in the long run.

well i am a newb and have seen many people having problems with the 64 processors nad programs...is that a kernel issue or what? Cause I plan on wine or cegedaCVSing my way to Guild Wars

I tried setting up a computer to include a monitor and the AMD 64 3700+ on zipzoomfly and came out just over $1000....not bad at all i say

Here is another vote for newegg.com; I get everything there.

Oh, and yeah, I've heard bad things about TigerDirect, so maybe just steer clear. :)

They were having problems because they installed a 64 bit OS. You can install 32 bit Ubuntu and you will notice no difference from any other processor except that the A64 is faster and better at memory management. 64 bit operating systems are still quite young and many programs and drivers are just not available for it yet. Just install the same Ubuntu you currently use and it will be no problem.

$1000 is great for a full system with a monitor.

This computer is from TigerDirect. I have bought hardware from them and have never had any problems. It is easy for me to find things on their site. I always get quick delivery and good service.

I'd sure support that! I have built about 5 computers for me and my friends and everything came from tigerdirect. Never had any problems yet. One time a motherboard did get fried and it was my fault that it happened, but I just sent it back to tigerdirect, and they nicely replaced it for nothing. They even refunded my shipping.

MWAVE.com

not as flashy as NewEgg, but i've had great success with warranty/replacement/shipping.
Sometimes cheaper than newegg as well.
I built 4 barebone systems on a combination of NewEgg perpiherals, an MWAVE barebone kit and some leftovers... never let me down

As a general rule :) And I avoid overclockers.co.uk like the plague, they are fine when they work, but try returning something to them and its like getting blood out of a stone. Post Sales Support is crap there.

I buy from Tiger, and New Egg if I need parts. Never had a bit of trouble with either place on parts etc. But normally I buy my stuff used at big auctions 20 to 60 machines at a time.
