Bell Canada just filed new tariffs for wholesale DSL including Usage Based Billing.

512 Kbps/s 2GB bandwidth cap $1.875/GB over
2 Mbps/s 20GB bandwidth cap $1.50/GB over
5 Mbps/s 60GB bandwidth cap $1.125/GB over

Good thing I'm in Western Canada. The ISPs here in BC are pretty good, and Telus owns the infrastructure.

I find it funny that as the years go by, our internet is actually getting slower and more resrictive.

That is terrible. I thought my 512k sucked to begin with, but at least I don't have a cap. 2GB? That's worse than the Verizon "unlimited" 5GB limit.

You think that's bad? Videotron (Quebec's cableco) has a 2GB bandwidth cap on it's lowest package (600kbit/s / 128kbit/s) as well. But the overage fees are... wait for it... $7.95/GB over with a monthly billing limit of $50. But at least they don't throttle unlike Bell and what they do to their wholesalers.

You think you have it bad? I wish I could pay those rates compared to what we pay over here, cheapest about $7/Gig.

Hmpf, all of a sudden I don't conisder my net connection all that bad... Over here my 1.5M costs ~$25/month (both ISP and infrastracture) with no traffic limit. The ISPs however intend to impose bounds on the rampant P2P users and limit the traffic, but those plans are still plans, as of now. I don't log my traffic, but my estimate would be around 20GB/month.
My 1.5M is nowadays considered the lower bound, the highest speed available to consumers is 8M through ADSL and 10M through cable TV, costing all in all around $75 AFAIR.

Wow. Over here (U.K) I get 10 Mbps and a TV package with most of the channels for £25, and that's completely unlimited although I think they throttle your speed back after you've downloaded 5GB in a day. 10 Mbps is the slowest package Virgin Media do in my area, some areas get 50Mbps.

The only reason why Canada's slowly shooting itself in the foot is because the regulatory agencies are powerless and easily influenced by the very same companies they're trying to regulate.

The CRTC is supposed to keep Bell Canada in line, but it is often the other way around.

Now that's sweet. Not as psychotic as in Korea or Japan (I think those people have personal optic fibers :D ), but very nice nevertheless.
