Hello! I am about as new to Linux as they come. I really wanted to learn something new about computers so I thought Linux would be different. Ubuntu is installed and working fine to the best of my knowledge. I have been finding my way around pretty well!

The first of probably many questions... I see people that have windows on their desktop that have the weather, a clock, the news... things like that. What are they called and where can I get them? Thanks!

Jon

Hello Jon
I'm New to the forum too.
Have you tried the top, left menu - Applications > Add Applications ?
There you can find many choices of additional applications to add to the menu.
Hope it helps .

I believe what you're looking for is gDesklets. You can find the package in Synaptic (System->Administration->Synaptic package manager, use ctrl+f to search, search for gDesklets and install whatever it throws at you). You can now start gDesklets from Applications->Accesories->gDesklets. You can get additional desklets (such as weather displays, system load displays, uptime displays and such) at http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ and http://www.gdesklets.org/
