Hello!

I'm a nostalgic of old retro os. Especially mac os 9.
I've searched in all the themes sites(gnome-look,artgnome,etc). But there is nothing that look like this:
http://www.guidebookgallery.org/pics/gui/desktop/firstrun/macos90-1-1.png
And and another thing is this so cool retro application launcher. Anyone now any linux equivalent?
I know i try to make linux look like mac. And i know it is an old creepy desktop: but i just love it.

Ps: Sorry for my bad english

Hmm. It sounds like a good idea, but in all truth, I don't think they will do as you suggest. I'm trying to make a new desktop environment, but I don't know how to make something look the way I want. If I knew how, I would make Ubuntu look like Mac OS 9. Maybe if we keep posting, someone will see.

To make an OS look that bad is indeed a challenge. :)

Thx for responding Treepolitik.
I think we can say there is no such good theme, work.
We will keep asking if someone could help. Myself i'm not as good as the one able to make this.
Yashiro you're right this is nothing like the "splendid" themes they call modern. I mean this themes, like the Vista or even Leopard, they are ugly because they don't look like it is an OS but a beauty contest. Indeed, beauty contest don't mean ergonomy. This os 9 desktop is a very advanced ergonomic desktop.:D and simplicity with ergonomy is what i'm lookin for. Plus: in a sentimental level: i love it. :)

Hi TakezoB.

You could try mac4lin.

Thank you. But i already know mac4lin. Its a good theme. But it is emulating a newer theme version of mac os(Leopard). What i'm looking for is a theme of mac os 9 . Like in the screenshot. It's a very different theme. And, if possible, an alike application launcher. Thank u anyway!

there are plenty of crappy looking window managers out there, just google around a bit.

Just try the link below. Its a good one and looks eyecandy.

Ubuntu like Mac Leopard (http://maketecheasier.com/turn-your-ubuntu-hardy-to-mac-osx-leopard/2008/07/23).

Enjoy..Mac Lovers.

Don't know about GNOME, but I bet you could get reasonably close using XFCE. There's a decent platinum theme for the window decorations, and the XFCE panel could emulate that launcher to some extent.

You'd have to pull in the top menu bar from the mac4lin thing, I don't know how substantively it changed between os 9 and os X, but the basic concept is the same, is it not?

As for fonts, wallpaper, and icons, I'm sure a bit of digging would turn those up.

Nelskurian, this is the leopard theme. I repeat what i already have wrote. Like the title says: i'm looking for a theme of mac os 9.
And i don't consider myself as a mac lover.

Thank you lykwydchykyn. I'm goin to look what i can do with xfce.
Yeah os 9 is very different from osx leopard. But you're right for the top menu bar. And i already used mac4lin for this.
I will look forward for icons, fonts, etc. Thx

Yeah i already used google. I usely don't ask in forums. Because usely, one way or another, google gives me results. But even searching hours, and I have searched again and again, the only thing u can see is some leopard themes or tiger themes; not os 9.

Not a bad one, anyway. I've seen people asking for Win98, WinME, Win2K, WinXp, and Vista-like themes, and also somebody who wanted Solaris and Irix. Compared to any of those OS9 makes a lot of sense.. ;)

edit: Here's a pretty good OS9-like Metacity theme for you: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Classic?content=46208

edit2: ..and here's a GTK2 & Compiz themes as well: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Classic+Platinum?content=67359

No problem. :) Tell me if you find good icons somewhere, it might be fun to turn my own setup into OS9 as well (At least for a while).

There's even a window manager in the repositories that emulates the classic amiga OS (amiwm).

Sow maybe the same can be done for Linux.

I salute you for making this topic! I LOVE the appearance and look and feel of Mac OS Classic.

In fact, this was the whole reason I got my Quicksilver back out and installed Mac OS 9.2.2 on it. Obviously, if I need to do heavy cpu-intensive processes, I would have to use my dual core intel pc, but for common things like checking email, browsing the web, etc., I would love to use my Mac OS 9.2.2 on my Quicksilver.

Unfortunately, flash isn't supported on it anymore. The highest flash that works on it is version 7. I DID find that there are open source projects in progress that are intended to replace the proprietary adobe flash. There are also some modern web browsers that are STILL in development and being supported for Mac OS 9, such as Classilla. This shows that there is still a significant number of computer users who are dedicated to Mac OS Classic. This proves there is still a relevant demand for it.

I really wish someone would come out with an open source version of Mac OS 9, like how Linux is a replacement for UNIX. I'm trying to brush up on my programming and trying to learn assembly so that I can try to at least start a project for that, but so far, I don't think I'm good enough.

For the time being, however, I would greatly enjoy a theme of Mac Classic, so I can at least pretend to use Mac OS Classic.

Thanks for these posts. I will definitely check out the themes that have been suggested in this topic.
