dual boot with vista using usb drive

Im trying to install ubuntu as a dual boot with vista. I would like to put ubunto on a emty usb hard drive. How do I do this.

Sorry for an obvious question, but does your machine support booting from a USB hard drive?

It mentions Edgy specifically, but the same process should apply to current Ubuntu versions.
