DRIScreenInit failed!

A fresh install of Linux Mint 6 or Ubuntu Intrepid does not allow me to run the restricted drivers for the following card;


ATI Technologies Inc R420 JI [Radeon X800PRO]

I get the following error message;


(EE) fglrx(0): DRIScreenInit failed!
(EE) fglrx(0): FB pci_device_map_range error!
(EE) fglrx(0): Failed to map FB memory
(EE) fglrx(0): firegl_SetSuspendResumeState FAILED -9.

And end up booting into low graphics mode... any ideas as I am using Mepis 8 at the moment (which is good by the way).

I've done the dpkg reconfigure route but all is default anyway - Intrepid is the first release which I have not been able to use in 3 years of Ubuntu.
