I'm getting a LOT more productivity out of twin panel file managers than out of Nautilus and would like a discussion about the idea of including Gnome Commander in Gnome/Ubuntu and Krusader in KDE/Kubuntu by default.

Anyone else here who loves the twin panel file managers?

I love twin panel file managers, totally agree with the productivity. Personally I prefer midnight commander (it's slowly grown on me :))

I've never given one a fair chance. I keep telling myself I'm going to learn how to use Midnight Commander, but I never end up using it. I've tried gnome commander as well, and it was too nice. I guess I'm just too comfortable using Thunar and plain CLI for now.

How many noobs will be able to use gnome-commander effectively? To me, it will be more of a turn off because it caters to power users, not noobs.

I read about split-tests today (http://www.conversion-rate-experts.com/articles/101-google-website-optimizer-tips/):

"Only the top few percent of marketers appreciate that it’s impossible to always spot the winner."

Back in the 80's, I saw 7-8 year-olds in computer classes having no hard time with Norton Commander.

And removing "clutter" like button-bars, imho. makes twin panels the cleanest and easiest to understand file manager design possible - two panels that show two directory lists with exactly same design vs nautilus with a folder list panel and folder content panel in different designs.

Both Dolphin & Konqueror allows you to have split/twin panels. I don't see the need for krusader.

I have always loved twin panel file manager since my Amiga days when I used Directory Opus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directory_Opus)

I wonder how hard it would be to port the code to linux seeing the above version was released under the GPL?

The closest Linux clone to DirOpus would be Worker (http://www.boomerangsworld.de/cms/worker/index?lang=en) which I think many people will enjoy, especially those using a lighter WM.

I agree that the twin panel design is great!

For one thing, it makes it very easy to copy or move files. You don't have to open two windows or copy/paste, just open the source and destination folders and drag any files you want between them. This is equally easy for remote directories. There are often built-in features such as synchronizing two directories - perfect for backing up important data on a remote server - and multi-rename tools for easy renaming of many files.

I suppose I'm a fan not only of the twin panel design itself but also of the advanced file managers that use it. To me, being able to easily and effectively manage your files is essential if you want to keep any sort of order in your directories.

So do I want Gnome Commander or Krusader included by default? I don't know. Krusader is good, but perhaps too advanced for the average user. I don't know if GC is a good app or not since I haven't used it. As always, I'm quite indifferent to these "X should be included by default" discussions. Installing software is easy.

It's not so much about the split panels. Its the whole approach. e.g. The way files are selected. Everything is keyboard-centred. etc. One can't emulate that just by adding a second panel.
