View Full Version : Benchmarking my kernel?

Okay, this is the second time I've compiled a kernel, but it's the first time the kernel actually worked. I set the scheduler speed thingy to 300 Hz instead of 250, disabled a bunch of hardware I didn't need (does anyone really use Voodoo 3DFX cards anymore, and if so, are they likely to use Ubuntu?) and set the processor family to Core2. It seems to boot a lot faster, and it seems a bit more snappy and responsive, but that could be a placebo effect.

Most of the benchmarks I know of are for graphics performance, or CPU performance, or hard drive performance, or memory performance. What is a good benchmark that will actually reflect on the performance of the kernel itself? I don't know if the Phoronix cryptography suite qualifies, that might depend on other factors.

I plan to run the benchmarks on both kernels and compare the results.

what about super pi?

The responsiveness you experience is expected with higher frequency of switching between processes.

Super pi? Cool, I'll run that. Any others?
