I've just been investigating where icons are saved by Ubuntu with regards to this (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1095725) post and came across this website (http://www.iconarchive.com/show/vista-like-boxes-icons-by-tpdkdesign.net/box-ubuntu-icon.html). It clearly says that 'The images or characters depicted in these icons are © by Microsoft'. Is this legal as the logo is clearly the Ubuntu one.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the owner/coder of this icon site got lazy and did not change that little copyright notice from (c) Microsoft to (c) Ubuntu (or whoever owns that image). They're probably just covering their bases by assuming Microsoft owns everything!

I agree it is just simple laziness.

I think Microsoft hold copyright over that box design. The Ubuntu logo is not theirs, but the box design (which seems like the unique Vista one) is probably theirs.

I emailed them asking about it and they updated the page to say "The images or characters depicted in these icons are © by Respective Copyright Owners."

Good, thanks for that.
