advantage of ubuntu over xubuntu

i know that Xubuntu is more lightweight than ubuntu,
abd that it uses the desktop xfce instead of gnome.
as a beginner user what is the advantage of ubuntu over xubuntu?

Xubuntu uses some different, lighter-weight packages. My Xubuntu machine died (power supply) before I got to play with it very much, but as I recall, it came with different office-ware, and file-sharing (Samba in particular) was a bit more work - out-of-the-box.

if i want to install my own applications (like open office, firefox...)
is there still a difference?

Not really, Xubuntu has all the lightweight "bare essentials" for your regular PC user with an older computer. Other than that, it just depends on whether you like gnome or xfce. I use Xubuntu on my laptop, and Ubuntu on my desktop.
