I'm running ubuntu 8.04 (32b) on a LG p1 kp11e notebook. I wanted to move to 64b , so I installed 8.10 (64b) on a seperate partition. It all went fine (more or less) until I tried to modprobe with a newest alsa driver (I cannot have sound on my speakers in either the 8.04 nor the 8.10 installation). when I booted I got a "kinit: no resume image" error and a command line enviroment. after fdisk-ing and reinstalling the ati driver, I don't get the error message any more, but still have only command line.

more information - if i "startx -- :1" from the command line, I do get the full graphical interface. I just don't get it immediately after boot.
