I'm running Intrepid, and my machine gets very slow just out of the blue. There doesn't seem to be any consistent thing I do to cause it. And the strange thing is it's just started to do this, I've been using it without issue on the current load of Intrepid for about 3 months. Although when it happens, and I do top in a shell I see that Xorg (mostly) and FireFox are taking turns raping my CPU. I can still use the machine because each only seems to grab one core and run with it, so there are two left but it sure makes it slow.

Looks like others are having the same issue, but I've not found any posts that offer a solution.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 530, with a Quad core processor, 3 gig of RAM. and Nvidia video card. And pretty much all I do is browse the internet, listen to music, and run a Winblows XP VM with VirtualBox. However, it will still do this even when the VM isn't active.
I've included below what info I know how to gather, any suggestions? I'd really rather not reload my machine again to get around this.
