i have my old laptop my dad is bringing me a 40gb hard drive to replace my 10gb. how would i do this? can i just boot on ubuntu live cd and transfer all the data from the hard drive to my 8gb flash drive, then boot with the 40gb in a live cd and transfer it that way? i really don't want to reinstall if i don't have too. any suggestions?

i think the best way to transfer your data is to copy only your /home directory to the flash drive. then install ubuntu at your 40 gb hard drive. at the end you can copy your data from the flash drive to your new /home.

be sure you copy all data from /home, not only the visible data!
