Hi
I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop edition on Intel P4 running on Intel 845GVSR motherboard with 1GB of ram with 160GB seagate PATA harddisk.

The install was done on a separate portion (as i have win xp also running on same machine)The root partition ( is an extended partition) is 30GB in size (formatted to ext3)and i have created a 2Gb swap partition (also an extended partition).

The installation went on smoothly. upon restart, even tough bootup took some 2-3 minutes, the login prompt was displayed with a plane golden color background. I entered username and password. After that the screen just shows the golden background. Note the mouse pointer moves if i move my mouse.

Assuming that since it was the first boot, some config might be pending, i left the machine for about 30 mins but to no avail.

Note: In installation forums i have seen post reagring install freezing due to memory problems. I have no such issues. memory tests passed ok

Any help is highly appreciated.

thanks and regards
sibi

Hi All

In this thread the posting by "themadhater" looks like my problem

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=951513&page=3

I have not tried the solution posted by maveryck( i.e moveing libpixman* from /usr/local/lib to another folder ).

Will post if the solution works.

One more URL (found by google search) of interest is
