With lots of help from this forum in the past few days, I finally managed to set up my Vista (ugh) computer to dual-boot with Ubuntu 8.10. I may have finally hit the last hurdle. When I select boot to Ubuntu, a window comes up and I type in my username jerry and my password. I think I know my username and my password, but it rejects my choice.

I found a post that said, in essence:

Press esc at grub prompt. Press e for edit. Hilite line 'kernel ...........' Press e for edit. Add rw init=/bin/bash at end of line. (I presume with a space between the last word and my additional text and that there is no space on either side of the equal sign). Press enter. Press b to boot.

The system should boot to a passwordless shell but it does not.

If it would do so I could type in passw username and set password before booting into the system for the first time.

I am so excited to be so close to success. Please help me.
