View Full Version : [ubuntu] yet another "Internet connections very slow..."

Yet another slow net connection issue within Ubuntu.

The network here is W2k3 based. you can happily access things on a XP machine.

Try and use a linux desktop or server (ive tried gentoo, ubuntu, etc etc) and you are serverly limited in download speed. its not just http access. its ftp, sftp, remote desktop, wget etc etc. so any connection to the outside world - your lucky to get a 29kb/s. connection speed isnt constant either. it will drop to say 13kb/s then up to 20 then down to 500 or so BYTES per second.

I tried accessing the net via an external proxy - same problem.

I found a workaround though.

I installed a proxy on a xp box on the same network and set the ubuntu box to access the net via this proxy. PERFECT results! 1.,1MB/s download speeds etc.

Now, is there something I need to setup here? WINS? etc. or are my Helpdesk lying to me and ARE restricting non Windows OS on network usage?

I really want to get this resolved though!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
