View Full Version : [kubuntu] Getting GRUB to recognize a Windows installation on a RAID0 array...

I have 4 SATA hard drives:

2 x 80GB in RAID0 [Windows]
1 x 320GB [media storage]
1 x 160GB [hopefully Kubuntu]

The RAID controller is an NVIDIA RAID from an ASUS A8N32-SLI motherboard.

I've read up on the FakeRaidHowTo (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto), but it's geared more for installing Ubuntu *onto* the RAID, whereas I'm installing Kubuntu on a separate HDD and I only need GRUB to recognize the RAID for my Windows installation. I'm still somewhat of a newbie, so I couldn't exactly figure out how to configure GRUB given the instructions from the FakeRaidHowTo.

I ran the Ubiquity installer from the 8.10 Live CD, installed Kubuntu onto the spare 160GB HDD, but now I get an "Error 21" in GRUB.

Any help would be incredible. Thanks!

Eh after reading your first post again...

GRUB Error 21 means it can't find the kernel.

Not from the livecd. HDD if you can.

No go on booting from the HDD. I can't yet get past the Error 21.

You try accessing the linux partition in Windows, it asks you if you want to format it. Choose yes, all data on linux partition is erased. Choose no, you can't read or write to the linux partition so you're going to have to use the Ubuntu LiveCD and edit menu.lst by hand located on your hard drive.

Can't access any OS installed on the HDD. Looks like my only option is through the Live CD.

So, when I edit menu.lst, what device do I list as my Windows RAID, and what devices do I list as my Kubuntu HDD?

On that Kubuntu installation, the /boot/grub/device.map reads:

(hd1) /dev/sdb
(hd2) /dev/sdc
(hd3) /dev/sdd


I know I only have 4 HDDs in there, so 2 of those should be recognized as a RAID, and another should be recognized as my Kubuntu installation.

Following the FakeRaidHowTo, I intalled dmraid on the Live CD boot (not on the Kubuntu HDD installation) and I was able to see /dev/mapper/nvidia_fcbhfaee -- which seemed to be the Windows RAID. Unfortunately, when I tried to CHROOT into my Kubuntu HDD intallation ('sudo chroot /media/disk' from the Live CD boot) and install dmraid there, the 'apt-get update' command fails at 96% with "Could not set non-blocking flag Bad file descriptor E: Method http has died unexpectedly!" Out of hope, I tried 'apt-get install -y dmraid' anyway, but it got all kinds of permission denied errors.

Basically, I just want to fix GRUB so I can boot into Windows or Kubuntu. Any ideas?

You need to install grub of the MBR of the ubuntu drive and then set your bios to boot from the Ubuntu drive:

Boot the LiveCD, open a terminal and type:


sudo grub

and then at the "grub" prompt:



find /boot/grub/menu.lst


This will return "(hdX,Y)" where "X" and "Y" are some numbers, for example (hd2,0).

Still at the grub prompt:


root (hdX,Y)
setup (hdX)
quit
(where "X" and "Y" need to be replaced by the numbers returned by "find /boot/grub/menu.lst")

Reboot (with the bios set to boot from the Ubuntu drive) and hope for the best.

If this did not work:

In order to get a clearer picture of your setup, boot from your LiveCD, download the Boot Info Script to the Live CD desktop:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Then open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type:


sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of the RESULTS.txt file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound/hash sign "#" graphic button in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it. The results of that script will help clarify your setup.

Hello,
I'm a nub so take what I say with a grain of salt but the first thing I suggest you do is to unplug the media storage drive. I know you shouldn't need to and if you know what you are doing then great but I myself tried this an nuked my storage/backup drive by accident. Fact is you don't need it plugged in while messing with this anyway and it will eliminate confusion to be sure which other drives you are on.

Next I would make sure you have any important data on your Windows install backed up too.

As I myself failed at this I will tell you that I finally gave up and decided my best option was to use the BIOS to select which drive to boot from. It is sure nice to be able to select it from a prompt and I would commend you if you figure it out (followed by asking you how you did it) but if you can't it is easy to select your boot drive in the BIOS and bypass the problem completely.

It sucked when I lost all my data while playing with this and would hate for you to experience the same. Good luck to you! :D

Grub seems to be correctly installed in the MBR of the Ubuntu partition.
Did you set the bios to boot from Ubuntu drive?
What happens when you boot from the Ubuntu drive? Does the Grub menu appear? Do you get any error messages?

That is not possible. An Nvidia fake raid is only loaded by driver\module. The bios can only be set to one drive, or the other, but neither will matter on a raid 0 configuration.
