I am running Xubuntu 8.10 and was wondering if i needed the likes of rkhunter to keep the computer secure. Thanks

No, Rkhunter is a tool for scanning your computer for already installed root kits. Though, root kits are not all that common. If you suspect that you have one (i.e. your computer is displaying symptoms of such), then it may be a tool to confirm that suspicion.
