Appearance driver

Hello!
I am new at ubuntu and I am using 8.10. I just installed it and I been looking around I really like it all. I been trying to up my display performance, and it tells me I need to update my driver for my graphics card (nvidia 8800gtx) and when I hit ok it comes up saying downloading but it goes to systemerror:Failed to lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock

Do you have a package manager running in addition to the driver install ?

If so, close it and try again.
