I already voted before I saw this thread. If you noticed, Colbert is the most suggested name and that's the one I voted for. The name is from Stephen Colbert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Colbert), the host of an American television show called The Colbert Report (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Colbert_Report) which is a humorous news show. It's kind of The Onion for those who are familiar with it.

Last week on his show, he asked viewers to vote for the name Colbert. This isn't the first time he's pulled stunts like this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colbert_bump#Cultural_impact). In fact, it has come under the name "Colbert Bump" which refers to a noticeable spike in popularity once mentioned on his show. For example, the day Firefox 3 was released, it was mentioned on his show and that night Mozilla noticed an increase in the number of download shortly after the episode aired.

I realize that a lot of UbuntuForum member's aren't American. That's why I went through that explanation. I think it would be really amazing if we could get it named Ubuntu, but it seems like Colbert is going to keep its top spot.

That was the hardest thing I've done all day.

First I gave up due to the same problem as above, then I went back to try all caps.

The pop-up tab kept closing on me and I had to use Opera's little "trash can" tool
to revive the tab it opened then recall from photographic memory the
letters that the captcha wanted because it didn't reload the image...

Now that is an aerospace-engineered website if I've ever seen one.

I love it. The only problem is, Colbert is in the lead with 115,000 votes, while Serenity only has about 99,000.

The thing is, though, NASA is not bound to name it anything that is suggested, even if it wins the contest.

+3 votes for Ubuntu (used different IPs).
For those voting for Colbert, Xenu, etc, note NASA's critera

The name should reflect the spirit of exploration and cooperation embodied by the space station, and follow in the tradition set by Node 1- Unity- and Node 2- Harmony.
Of the suggested names only Synergy and Ubuntu seem to meet that. Looks like Serenity will take it anyway.

Personally, I would have rather had Vista on the list than MYYEARBOOK.

I really want Serenity to win, but I'd find it comical if they really did name it after Stephen Colbert. I mean, he does have a species of trapdoor spider, a bald eagle, a turtle, a co-mascot for a Michigan hockey team, a Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor, and an Air Virgin plane named after him. Naming this would just be the icing on the cake.

Exactly, once Ubuntu gets ahead by a 90% margin above the rest I'm sure NASA would be quite suspicious.

The name should reflect the spirit of exploration and cooperation embodied by the space station, and follow in the tradition set by Node 1- Unity- and Node 2- Harmony.

Ubuntu...?

Yeah right....

I don't know if the thing is working anymore, and it looks as if Colbert may have won it, blah.

Just so everyone knows, the captcha is case-sensitive.

Yay! Vista is definately off the list now! Its a shame, its a nice word but since micro$oft hijacked it, it has bad connotations. (eng?)

I voted for ubuntu again, but sadly with not much time left I dont think we can win this one!
Waaaagh! *stamps feets in corner*

Oh well, maybe we'll get a fuel line named after us or something?!

We could always hope for a BSOD plague, then only *nix users could vote! Yay! (Things always work so nicely in my mind!)

On that note, do you know if they use *nix in space? That sounds cool... Space*nix...

Surely they wouldnt risk a BSOD as they approach to dock with the ISS?!

xx vote more while you can! It ends at 4:00 on the 20th! xx

I was curious, so I googled "NASA linux". According to a blogger who saw some NASA folks at the Smithsonian, NASA uses Ubuntu (http://ubuntulinuxtipstricks.blogspot.com/2008/07/nasa-uses-ubuntu.html). Plus headlines like "NASA to build 10,000-processor Linux computer (http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/07/28/HNnasalinux_1.html)" and "NASA Takes Linux in Space (http://news.softpedia.com/news/NASA-Takes-Linux-in-Space-57672.shtml)" were all over. And that's only Linux, I'm sure other *nix is in use, the scientific community uses it heavily.

Voted Ubuntu naturally

I really cant understand how "my Year book" is in the top 10. Seriously? Has the site been hacked? Or the captcha beaten?

Colbert is a crap name. TBH ubuntu isnt great either. Vista would have been nice had M$ not ruined the word. Serenity, or something like that would be ok too.

Ubuntu is actually a good word. It means humanity to others or to be united with the rest of the ppl and Node 3 is a ISS connector part, isn't it?

I reopened the tab with the word verification and now I can just fill in the captcha again and again and its says "Comment added" or whatever every time. Do you think its actually counting?

I've wondered the same thing. Others talk about cookies, but I can vote several times and it never complains. But I don't know if it's actually counting them all.

Nope voting is done and over with. Ubuntu only made it to 7th place. At least Vista is off the list though!

But bc of this thread we got on the list to #7 and bumped vista. That's pretty cool :KS

I thought we made it to 6th? Or did they have 11 people on the list?

No there was 10 names on the list the contest ended with Ubuntu at 7th place. It may of hit 6th at one point but if it did then if obviously got pushed down again. Anyway just visit the link in the first post. you will see the name rankings for the top 10 as well as the vote percentages for the default selections.
