Came across this today,http://www.efi-x.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=23&language=english

Works with original media and seems to handle updates without hassles. Wonder what Apple is going to do about this?

Probably nothing. EFIX is nothing more than a re-implemented bootloader for EFI, which Apple does not technically own the rights to.

So this supposedly allows you to install OSX from an official CD rather than using a hacked one? I'm kinda confused.

It emulates EFI, which Apple uses instead of typical PC BIOS. Some Intel machines use EFI now, too.

But yeah, the idea is that EFI allows you to install an unhacked Mac OS X, though I imagine that you still need similar-spec hardware. (Intel Core 2 Duo, Nvidia Graphics card, etc)
