when i go to the part called "SELECT AND INSTALL SOFTWARE" it doesnt do anything it stays in 2% and then it gives me a msg:

installation step failed

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failling item again from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Select and install software


what can i do plz help

Have you checked the cd for defects? Its one of the options at the main menu.

the only defect the cd has is this one

the .pics/logo-50.jpg file faild the md5 checksum verification.
your cd-rom or this file may have been corrupted

i dont know why it still happens, i downloaded bolth versions of ubuntu the 8.04 and the 8.10 and im having the same problem on bolth versions.:(:(:(

Your problem is that you do not have enough base memory to install Ubuntu (and if you try the alternate install it will run slowly). See this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements). Your best bet would be to try Xubuntu. You can get it from here (http://www.xubuntu.org/get). I recommend the 8.04 Hardy Heron version.

Thanks, what i want really is tu turn my pc to a server..! that would work..?
