Open a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal) and post the output to
sudo fdisk -l this should tell if you windows partition is still there.

what and how me to read this:
attilab@attilab-laptop:~$ sudo fdisk -1
[sudo] password for attilab:
fdisk: invalid option -- '1'
Usage: fdisk [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK Change partition table
fdisk -l [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK List partition table(s)
fdisk -s PARTITION Give partition size(s) in blocks
fdisk -v Give fdisk version
Here DISK is something like /dev/hdb or /dev/sda
and PARTITION is something like /dev/hda7
-u: give Start and End in sector (instead of cylinder) units
-b 2048: (for certain MO disks) use 2048-byte sectors

Looks like good news. You still have two ntfs partitions and your windows is probably on /dev/sda1.
Install ntfs-config and use it to configure and mount your windows if you want.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ntfs-config
gksudo ntfs-config
And if you are having problems booting windows, post your /boot/grub/menu.lst.
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

i did the directed install, but actually it was there,
at the boot prompt I select XP, but just blinks and gets back to boot selection,
now, this is what I have, I guess the same as before the command install ntfs-config:
please tel me more, I need to get back to XP asap...
