How is it possible to transfer files on Ubuntu to an mp3 player? How do I get a download to enable this?

There could be multiple ways to do this.

First if the mp3 player shows up as a hard drive or mountable drive then you can just browse the drive to find out where it stores the music and copy and paste the files into there. You just treat the mp3 player as a normal hard drive just making sure to unmount it or eject it before disconnecting the drive. I have a Best Buy Insignia mp3 player that I do just that with.

Hope this helps. Others might have other ideas.

Recent or newer models of MP3 Players are already plug-and-play and most Operating Systems (even Ubuntu) will recognize them as portable devices - in short, they behave as USB Flash Disks and I think Ubuntu will mount your device automatically. To copy files is just like using your usual USB Flash.

Sound Converter is a converter supported by Ubuntu. You just have to have GStreamer LAME plug-in/codec to convert formats from *.ogg to *.mp3 and so on. Try to visit http://appnr.com/. I think the site also lists mp3 player/iPod manager for ubuntu.

Hope that helps too. 8)
