Hi,
I'm running Intrepid on an Athlon 64 2800+ machine.I recently added on an old 256 MB module to the existing 1 GB RAM module. After that Ubuntu stops at a black screen with a blinking cursor.Removing the module however lets me boot normally.I tested the old 256 mb module on another setup and it works fine.Is there any workaround to this?

You sure that combo will boot? Most motherboards come with documentation that lists the legal memory combinations and the slots involved. You generally can't just insert two sticks of different sizes and expect them to work.

You could try booting from the LiveCD and running Memtest -- but if you can't get that far, the combination is not valid for your machine.

The RAM has nothing to do with it. It either loads the BIOS and boots or it doesn't and it just beeps (if you didn't yank the transducer out)
