Welcome. How to make it works?
when I try to open file:///home/user/Desktop/blahblah.mpg nothing happens.

I run firefox via xterm and get such response:

NP_Initialize
Init scriptable instance
Failed to open DBUS session: Unable to determine the address of the message bus
Die scriptable instance

Any ideas?

I've never gotten it to work either. I recommend installing mozilla-mplayer. It works a lot better.
