I tried to install ubuntu in my computer with128MB RAM.

when i put that CD in drive and started booting, there is an option to start and install from live CD.
But my computer got stuck in middle. I have also tried on safe graphics mode and got the same result.

Is there any possibility to install Ubuntu 6.06 in text mode?

On pressing ESC there is a command prompt.

boot:

Are there any commands to get to text mode from here?
Thanks.

128MB of RAM is just not enough RAM to start the LiveCD session. Try the alternate CD.

The alternative CD is one that installs Ubuntu 'via text mode'.

You can download it from the Ubuntu mirrors site...

Why are you installing Ubuntu 6.06? It is almost 3 years old, and support will be ending in the next few months. 8.04 Hardy Heron is the current LTS release. However, with only 128mb of ram, I recommend Puppy Linux. It is up to date and runs great on older computers.

Thanks all for replies.

i have received ubuntu 6.06 through shipping. can anyone tell me more about alternate CD, because i have only one CD and in that CD im not able to do installation through text mode.

Thanks for the idea of puppy linux. i have a dial up connection and it is not possible to download huge files from net.

Is there any way to go to text mode from boot: prompt?

Puppy Linux is only a 95mb download. If that's too big, you might check out SliTaz, which is only a 25mb download (though arguably not as beginner friendly as Puppy).

I really think you are setting yourself up for disappointment trying to install Ubuntu with only 128mb of ram. I personally would not use it with less than 512mb. Also keep in mind that, if you install an older version, there will be many megabytes of upgrades the first time you use it. This may be a concern since you have dialup.

I'd suggest you try the Ubuntu Minimal install CD: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

Then go here for instructions on how to install: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

The barebones CD is a tiny download (about 9.0 MB or so) and then the rest of the install is accomplished online. The final result is a fully updated and current release. Or, if you prefer, you can download an older release (going back as far as 6.06 Dapper Drake). I'd strongly suggest using 8.04 instead, but the choice is yours.

With a dial up, that ought to be fun.
