i think that allowing gnu/linux to be "applealing" or "pretty" is a good thing. personally i dislike the CDE interface because imo it looks like junk.

Very good article.
I thought that you'd be interested to know that others thought so too and you even made it to a german linux news site:

Hi Ralph!

There are a fair amount of comments posted on that article on the german site.

Can you translate the general overview of what they are talking about?

I dont understand German!

Thanks

Hi, a large amount of the posts revolve around problems people have with doing what you suggested. For example the first discussion "Noch nie so einfach..." is about problems some people encountered when they actually tried to get involved in translations. The bottom line is that many think an easier way to actually get involved is needed and of course http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/RosettaReleaseAnnouncement is mentioned as a step in the right direction.

Then there's a discussion about "dressing up the penguin", just like here. :-D

Next up there's a discussion about the problems people who don't speak english well enough have with fileing bug reports.

Finally someone is making a reference to the KDE Quality project as a possibility to easily get involved in a big open source project.

Bottom line, they all seem to totally agree with you and are focusing on the practical problems involved with doing what you suggested. These problems might actually be something to take up for a follow up article, imho.
