Will ubuntu run on a hand held computer? It's running windows at the moment and is rather old (>7years).

Only 7 years old? My 10 year old desktop can run 8.10 just fine. Why don't you try downloading the live CD and see if it runs from there?

Handheld computers of that vintage can't handle a CD drive. I assume he has some version of PocketPC. Those almost certainly have an ARM CPU, and the OS is in ROM, which may or may not be flashable. I would be pessimistic about the possibility, but it might be possible, given the proper flashing tools, whatever they might be.

I have dug it out of my draws, it's not as old as I suspected, 6 years I think. It's a Dell Axim X5.

It has no CD Drive but it does have a memory card slot.

Some info:
Processor Intel XScale 400MHz
RAM 64MB
ROM 48MB
