Why suspend works on Xubuntu, but not Ubuntu

I have a desktop running Intrepid Ibex. The suspend function has never seemed to work; or maybe I should say, the resume doesn't work. It suspends, but doesn't seem to come back.

I recently installed Xubuntu on a spare partition to see how it was working these days, and I found that suspend and resume seems to work fine with it. Same Linux kernel. Same computer settings, same basic grub settings.

So, what is it about Ubuntu Gnome that makes it not work? Anyone have any ideas? It would be nice to be able to use it.
