Hey guys, sorry, this is kind of a pointless thread, but I'm just so darn excited! My sister is getting a new computer today, and giving me her old one and I'm gonna install Ubuntu over XP immediately. I'm so freaking excited!!!!! :D

Freebies are always good (most of the time :) )

What are the specifications on the machine?

Throw Arch on it :) .

Or any other distribution for that matter. :)

You have available hardware to experiment with. There are plenty of other good/interesting/stable/amazing/etc distributions out there. :)

However, ultimately I recommend Arch. :P

Cool! I'd be excited too. What are the laptop specs?
And I recommend Ubuntu, while some are recommending Arch, but it's strictly up to you.

Put either Arch, Gentoo, CRUX, or one of the BSDs on it, and play around with those systems.

I've never heard of Arch...hm, well it's a Dell D505, it has a 30GB hd and i think 128mb of RAM, pretty crappy, but Ubuntu runs very smoothly on it.

Yeah right.

I would at least up the ram to 512mb and even then I would still use Arch + Fluxbox combined with lightweight apps.

Tisk....life without Arch is a terrible thing. And Ubuntu with only 128MB of RAM may be frustrating as per billgoldberg points out.

@OP You should try running CrunchBanbg Linux on it, it's based off Ubuntu and is designed to be very light weight.
