Possible? different color bkg to each desktop

Gray haired n00b has Ubuntu 8.10 happily installed. Would like to give a different color to each of the 2 Gnome desktops. Possible?
Changing color of 1 causes same change to both. All suggestions appreciated. Thanks to Linux folks!! :confused:

The Cliff Notes version:

- This is currently not implemented in Gnome
- They are working on it
- KDE (and others?) have this feature, so if you're not too attached to Gnome, you can try that.
