*sigh* Xubuntu wanted to upgrade some network manager software this morning. When I restarted, my desktop icons came up, but I had no top or bottom bar. This happened once before and all I could do was reinstall. I'd really rather not have to open a terminal window every time I start the computer to type

xfce4-panel

to get my menu to come up. Does anyone know a fix for this?

You could always place the command in your .profile file in your home directory. All the commands in your .profile file are executed every time you log in.

*shakes head* that doesn't work very well. It brings up the menu OK, but it doesn't have a button to shut down the computer, just to quit out of the panel. Also, when I open Firefox, the top bar of the program is hidden behind the top panel--I can't move the Firefox window.

I have had the menu bar dissapear twice on me now. To fix it I-

-pressed alt and F2
-ran xfce4-panel in the terminal
-restarted the computer using the power button making sure that the box saying 'save this session for future logins' was ticked

that was it- worked for me after the restart:)
