I've installed and used Ubuntu successfully for some time now on a couple of computers but I am having problems installing it on one particular laptop, an older Dell Inspiron B120. I have tried installing Ubuntu from a download and from the original CD from Ubuntu, as well as a USB installation. All my other installs were seamless and easy but this one doesn't work. Is there something I need to do with this laptop beforehand? When I use the USB and the CD, Ubuntu indeed loads, and the installation starts normally, but then stops completely when we see the brown Ubuntu desktop.

Thanks for any help.

How much RAM does your old laptop have?

This old laptop has only 256 MG of RAM, which is not much, but similar to another laptop I use, running Ubuntu.

Maybe you should consider using the alternate CD to install it with only 256MB of RAM. To run the LiveCD, you need something like 384MB of RAM.
