No sound adter install/updates

I did a fresh install ubuntu 8.10 this evening. Sound was working , I heard system sounds and was able to play MP3s however, after doing the system updates that were available , I have no sound at all. No system sounds, no sound from MP3s.

Any idea why the updates broke my sound? I did notice that there were pulse audio updates among those installed. IHow can I fix this?
