(it's over at my friends house) I don't remember the processor's exact specs but it's not very good. 16MB of RAM. 2GB harddrive.

It's running Windows 95 but is very very glitched and slow. I got a BSOD each time I tried to start IE

Damn Small Linux is too much for this computer....how about Arch?

I just want to see as a hobby if I can get something working on it and actually functional. (not just terminal)

Xubuntu won't work.

Xubuntu would definitely not work if DSL doesn't. My only recommendations are to use the Ubuntu alternate CD to do a command-line installation using the text-based installer. That should get you a base system on which you can install a light window manager and some lightweight apps. You could also do a Debian net install for pretty much the same effect.

The only other distribution I can think of that is lighter than DSL is Slitaz (I think I spelt that right), maybe that would work?

Ohhh yeah, good idea, the Alternate CD might work.

If anything will work, TinyCore Linux will. But you definately won't get a GUI working on that thing without upgrading the RAM to at least 32MBs.

Try INX:

Look through this thread and you might be able to find something http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1071823 I think the lowest ram usage was around 12 MB

Edit: the actual winner was 10.8 MB http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6770107&postcount=85

There's also Deli Linux: http://www.delilinux.org/
Wolvix: http://wolvix.org/ (might be too heavy, though...)
AntiX: http://antix.mepis.org/index.php/Main_Page

Also, check out K.Mandla's blog here: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/ Recently did an experiment to use a 100mhz laptop for a week :)

http://www.debian.org/releases/woody/

You only need the first cd to install.

If you are non-networked, you should download the first four to get a decent desktop.
